Useful Ranged Gear
Dwarf Cannon

The Dwarf Cannon offers the fastest way to train ranged at lower levels. This cannon, which can be set up in a multi-combat area, will attack monsters for you and give you ranged experience for each attack.
Dwarf Cannons are often used to fly through levels 1 – 40 ranged. They are also used for fast-leveling at higher levels and speeding up slayer tasks.
Requirements: Dwarf Multicannon quest (easy and no requirements)
Ava’s Attractor/Ava’s accumulator/Ava’s Assembler

Ava’s Attractor, Accumulator and Assembler are cape-slot items that pick up your darts, arrows, bolts and knives for you. This makes them a must-have for ranged training. They also give great ranged bonuses.
Requirements: Animal Magnetism quest
Necklace of Anguish

The Necklace of Anguish is a must-have for ranged training. Those who can afford it (it costs 10M), should use it as it will definitely increase your experience rates and speed up your leveling. This amulet, which is best in slot for ranged, gives you 5+ Ranged Strength bonus and 15 Ranged Attack bonus.
Archers ring (i)

The Archers Ring gives 4 Ranged Attack and 4 Ranged Defense bonus. This makes it a must-have for ranged training to those who can afford it (it costs 3M).
Players with enough Nightmarezone points can Imbue the ring which will double its power: 8 Ranged Attack & 8 Ranged Defence. This is the best-in-slot ring for ranged training.
Rigour Prayer

Rigour Prayer is the best ranged prayer in the game and useful for ranged training.
Rigour Prayer requires 74 prayer and 70 defence. It boosts Ranged Attack by 20%, Ranged Strength by 23% and Defence by 25%.
To use Rigour, you need to consume a Dexterous Prayer Scroll which you can buy from the Grand Exchange for 16M (yes, it’s expensive!)

Ranged levels 1 – 45 Dwarf Multicannon at Crabs
This method requires completion of the Dwarf Cannon quest (easy quest with no requirements).
The fastest way to train Ranged in the early levels is to use the dwarf cannon in a multi-combat area.
Some great examples of such areas are sand crabs, rock crabs and ogres.
Using the Dwarf Multicannon, you will see experience rates of 50 to 60k per hour.
Ranged Levels | Type | EXP Rate | Total Time | Total Cost | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
![]() | 1 – 45 | Dwarf Cannon in multicombat | 50 – 60k/hr | 1 hour | 470k |
Ranged levels 45 – 99 Chinning at Maniacal Monkeys
This method requires completion of the Monkey Madness and partial completion of Monkey Madness II.
Once you reach level 45, you get access to regular chinchompas which can be used in multi-combat to achieve amazing experience rates.
The absolute best location for this is the Maniacal Monkey dungeon from the Monkey Madness 2 quest.
Ranged Levels | Type | EXP Rate | Total Time | Total Cost | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
![]() | 45 – 55 | Chinchompa | 250k/hr | 25 min | 3M (EST) |

Ranged levels 1 – 75 Sand Crabs with Darts

To fly through levels 1 – 40 (or beyond) you can use the Dwarf canon method listed in our expensive route which will only set you back about 470k.
Ranged Levels | Type | EXP Rate | Total Time | Total Cost | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
![]() | 1 – 5 | Iron Darts | N/A | less than 5 min | less than 2k |

Notes:
Once you reach level 30, get the Ava’s Attractor which will pick up your darts for you. Also switch your ranged armour to snakeskin.
Once you reach level 40, turn your Ava’s Attractor into an Ava’s Accumulator. Also switch to Green D’hide.

Ranged levels 75 – 99 Cannoning Dagannoths

This method requires completion of Horrror from the Deep quest
Dagannoths, while often crowded, are by far the best place to get ranged experience with a cannon.
Doing this, you are able to get up to 150k experience per hour in an empty world with a cannon and blowpipe setup.
The best part? The loot from Dagannoths are good and will help off-set the price of cannonballs and toxic blowpipe.
These guys are located in the dungeon under the lighthouse of the Horror from the Deep quest and require completion of the quest to access.
Image | Ranged Levels | Type | EXP Rate | Total Time | Total Cost |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
![]() | 75 – 99 | Cannon + mithril darts (no blowpipe) | 90k/hr | 130 hours | 480k/hr cball cost 6k/hr darts cost 400k/hr loot Cost: 86k/hr Total: 11M |
![]() | 75 – 99 | Cannon + adamant darts (no blowpipe) | 100k/hr | 120 hours | 480k/hr cball cost 46k/hr darts cost 400k/hr loot Cost: 126k/hr Total: 15M |
![]() | 75 – 99 | Cannon + Blowpipe (addy darts) | 150k/hr | 80 hours | 400k/hr loot 480k/hr cball cost 250k/hr blowpipe Cost: 330k/hr Total: 26M |
Alternative: levels 75 – 99 Slayer Training with Toxic Blowpipe and Cannon

From levels 75 ranged you should combine training ranged together with slayer for the most efficient experience.
For many slayer tasks, you’ll be able to set up a cannon to speed through the tasks.
The best part? The loot will off-set the cost of cannonballs and toxic blowpipe in many cases.
Be sure to wear a slayer helmet (i) for the 15% increased ranged damage and accuracy while training slayer with ranged.
Cheapest Method to Train Ranged in OSRS
This is the Cheapest Ranged Training method. [Click here] to skip to the next method or [Click Here] to go back to the navigation.

This is the cheapest way to train ranged in OSRS while still receiving decent experience rates.
From levels 1 – 99 you’ll want to train at Sand Crabs or Ammonite Crabs using Mithril Darts.
Due to the cost of Mithril Darts, taking this method all the way to 99 will only cost you a grand total of around 1M gp.
If you’re okay with spending a little more on Adamant darts, you can shave off about 17 hours but it will cost you 6M more.
Below is a chart showing the cost and exp rates in detail.
Image | Ranged Levels | Type | EXP Rate | Total Time | Total Cost |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
![]() | 75 – 99 | Mithril Darts | 57k/hr (at 75 ranged) 70k/hr (at 90 ranged) | 240 crabs/hr (75 ranged) 294 crabs/hr (90 ranged) 240 exp/crab Total: 184 hours | 6k/hr Total: 1.1M |
![]() | 75 – 99 | Adamant Darts | 64k/hr (at 75 ranged) 76k/hr (at 90 ranged) | 270 crabs/hr(at 75 ranged) 318 crabs/hr(at 90 ranged) Total: 167 hours | 46k/hr Total: 7.6M |
Ironman and Group Ironman Players should use the Dorgeshuun Crossbow (Death to the Dorgeshuun Quest) to train ranged at Sand Crabs/Ammonite Crabs all the way to 99.
AFK Method to 99 Ranged in OSRS: The Nightmare Zone
This is the AFK Ranged Method. [Click Here] to go back to the navigation. Or [Click Here] to read our Ranged Gear Guide.

This is how you can train ranged COMPLETELY AFK for UP TO 6 HOURS.
Ammonite, Sand and Rock Crabs are great for AFKing but they go unaggressive every 10 minutes and sometimes they can get crowded.
They are definitely not perfect.
Luckily, there is one way to train ranged completely AFK.
And this training method utilises the Nightmare Zone.
If you’re completely unfamiliar with the Nightmare Zone, I suggest you check our our Complete Nightmare Zone Guide first.
You can teleport to the Nightmare Zone using the mini-game teleport menu. Easy!
Nightmare Zone Ranged Requirements
Since the Nightmare Zone features Quest bosses, you will need to complete some Quests before you can start a dream at this minigame.
You will need to have completed at least 5 quests to access the minigame.
Some examples of easy quests are:
- Fight Arena
- Lost City
- Vampire Slayer
- The Grand Tree
- Mountain Daughter
- The Ascent of Arceuus
It is also recommended that you have a decent Ranged level before starting to train here. (70+) before that, you can train at Sand Crabs, Rock Crabs or Ammonite Crabs.
Nightmare Zone Ranged Monsters
You need to select at least 5 monsters to start a dream at the Nightmare Zone.
The following 5 monsters will give you the most AFKable experinece:
- The Kendal (Mountain Daughter)
- King Roald (What Lies Below)
- Sand Snake (The Depths of Despair)
- Count Draynor (Vampire Slayer)
- Trapped Soul (The Ascent of Arceuus)
If you are missing a quest from the above list you can replace them with monsters from the list below:
- Tree Sprit (Lost City)
- Khazard Warlord (Tree Gnome Village)
- Bouncer (Fight Arena)
Nightmare Zone Ranged Gear
You should bring your highest possible range equipment and whatever weapon you are comfortable using.
A blowpipe is recommended but it will be costly so you can also use a Magic Shortbow (i) instead.
Use a Locator Orb or Dwarven Rock Cake to Lower your Hitpoints

You should also bring a Dwarven Rock Cake (Recipe from Disaster) or a Locator Orb (Dragon Slayer II).
Those are important, because they will help bring down your hitpoints.
The reason you bring down your hitpoints is so that the monsters can only hit 1’s on you, making your Absorption potions last A LOT longer.
The Locator Orb is more effective that the Dwarven Rock Cake because the latter only hits 1s.
How to stay AFK

The goal is to stay inside the Nightmare Zone for up to 6 hours.
To do this, you need to start a NORMAL rumble. (costs 12K each)
Normal rumbles have easier bosses and thus will help you stay AFK for longer.
You should bring 6 ranging potions and the rest of your inventory should consist out of absorption potions and a Locator Orb (or Dwarven Rock Cake).
You should pot up every 15 minutes and keep your hitpoints as low as possible. And make sure you are at full absorption as well of course.
Using this method, you should only be checking your screen every 5-10 minutes for a split second.
TIP: Do this on a phone using OSRS Mobile.
OSRS Ranged Guide for Pures
This is the Ranged Guide for Pures. [Click Here] to go back to the navigation. Or [Click Here] to read our Ranged Gear Guide.

Ranged Levels 1 – 75 Sand Crabs/Rock Crabs
As a Ranged Pure, you should start off your training at Rock or Sand Crabs and stay there until at least level 75.
You can use a dwarf cannon simultanously to fly through the early levels if you have the funds (costs about 450k/hr).
You can also stick here until 99 Ranged as a pure if you don’t plan on using a cannon to train.
Ranged Levels 75 – 99 Cannoning Dagonnaths
Once you’ve reached level 75 ranged, you should train at Dagonnaths underneath the Horror from the Deep Lighthouse (quest completion is requires).
Cannoning Dagonnaths are preferred because they offer higher experience rates than Cannoning Sand or Rock Crabs and thus are more cost-efficient.
Dagonnaths also drop a lot of seeds which can help pay for the cost of cannonballs.
Alternative: Levels 75 – 99 AFKing at the Nightmare Zone
As an alternative, you can also utilize the Nightmare Zone as a Ranged Pure.
This way you can train ranged while being AFK.
You should bring a Dwarven Rock Cake while training Ranged to keep your Hitpoints as low as possible so that your absorption potions last longer.
You should use a MSB(i) or Blowpipe as your weapon.
Check out our Nightmare Zone Ranged Section for more info.
Pure Ranged Guide Wrap Up
As a Ranged Pure, you don’t have that many training options. What we’ve listed above will give you the highest experience rates currently in the game.
If you prefer fast leveling and don’t mind spending money, you should use a cannon. (keep in mind you don’t gain hitpoints!)
If you prefer AFK training, train at crabs without a cannon and choose the Nightmare Zone at higher levels.
You should also make sure you are using the best weaponry and wearing the highest-level gear at all times. Check out our Pure Ranged Gear Guide to know exactly what gear you can use at which level.
OSRS F2P Ranged Guide
This is the Ranged Guide for F2P Players. [Click Here] to go back to the navigation. Or [Click Here] to read our Ranged Gear Guide.

As an F2P player, you don’t have many options when it comes to training ranged.
Below are the training spots which are best for each ranged level.
You should basically stick around Lumbridge for the first 20 levels, move on to Barbarian Village for levels 20-40 and then move on to Hill Giants.
Once you reach level 60, you can start training at Moss Giants which offer the highest experience per hour for F2P Ranged training. They have nice drops as well.
Check out our F2P Ranged Gear Guide to know exactly which level gear you can wear at which point.
Image | Ranged Levels | Best Monsters | Info | Location |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 – 20 | Chickens, Goblins or Cows | You can make some extra money through Cowhides if you decide to pick them up but banking will decrease your exp rates by a lot. | ||
20 – 40 | Barbarians (Barbarian Village), Minotaurs (Stronghold of Security underneath Barbarian Village) | Minotaurs commonly drop iron arrows. | ||
40 – 60 | Hill Giants | Hill Giants drop Big Bones which can be buried for prayer experience or sold at the GE for profit. | ||
60 – 99 | Moss Giants | Moss Giants provide the best experience per hour in F2P Ranged Training. You can also make decent profit through the drops. | ||
70 – 99 | Ankou (Stronghold of Security), Lesser Demons (Karamja) | Lesser Demons are great for AFKing, Ankous are great for profit. |
Ranged Gear By Level
Use this table to figure out just which gear you can wear at which ranged level. Be sure to always wear the highest gear you possibly can.
The info section will contain the requirements for the gear.
All Best in slot items are highlighted in green.
Note: This table only includes ranged gear that is useful for ranged training.
Gear such as Karils, Armadyl and so forth which is used for bossing is not useful for most ranged training (slayer excluded) because it has lower ranged attack bonusses than the armour listed here.

Low Level Ranged Training Spots
Low Level players want to train at crab locations because crabs have low defence and attack meaning they are easy to kill and won’t hit you very much either. On top of that they are aggressive and multi-combat which makes them prime locations for AFK-training and cannoning.
Most early-level ranged training is done at crabs. Ammonite and Sand Crabs are preferred over Rock Crabs as they have more hitpoints (especially ammonite) but they are often more crowded and more difficult to reach.
Rock Crabs

Rock Crabs are located in Relekka and can be easily accessed by anyone.
If you don’t have a teleportation method directly to Relekka, you can teleport to Camelot and run over there instead. If you don’t have the required magic level, you can use a Camelot Teleport tablet which you can from the Grand Exchange.

---|---|---|
13 | 50 | 200 |

Sand Crabs

Sand Crabs are located on Hosidius and require no favour to access so they are 100% noob friendly.
To get to Hosidius, you can use a Xeric’s Talisman, spirit tree or if you’re a new player you can use the Skill Necklace and teleport to the Woodcutting Guild. (skills necklaces can be bought from the grand exchange)

Ammonite Crabs

Ammonite Crabs are located on Fossil Island and are the preferred crabs to train at because of their high hitpoints level.
However, to get access to Ammonite Crabs you need to complete the following two quests:
- The Dig Site
- Bone Voyage
To get to Fossil Island, use a Digsite Pendant to teleport. If you don’t have a digsite pendant, you can also run to the digsite in Varrock and Teleport there by talking to Barge Guard. (Remember, you need to complete the Dig Site Quest first!)
