Everyone knows that chinning is the best ranged experience in the game, but how does it work? This osrs chinning guide covers both MM1 and MM2 locations, gear/inventory setup, and how to chin with the bonecrusher necklace.
Chinning EXP Rates
Chinning experience rates depend on your location (MM1 tunnels or MM2 tunnels), whether you use black/red chins, attack style (short or medium fuse), and whether you use the 2-tile method or the AFK method.
Skeletal monkeys (MM1) experience rate:
Chinning against skeletal monkeys will give you experience rates of between 150 to 400K per hour. Depending on your ranged level, chinchompas used and method used.
Maniacal monkeys (MM2) experience rate:
Against maniacal monkeys, you can expect experience rates of between 350 – 800K. Completely depending on which chinchompas you are using, and whether or not you are efficiently using the two-tile method or not.
Other factors that will influence your hourly experience rates:
- your gear setup
- your current ranged level
- whether or not you have access to the rigour prayer
- how often you sip ranging potions

Chinning Locations
Chinning in MM1 tunnels
To gain access to the monkey madness tunnels, you’ll need to do the monkey madness quest all the way up to the part where the zooknock tunnels are used. (So you might as well finish it, unless you are a zerker pure*)
The easiest way to get here is by using the Ape Atoll teleport, which becomes available after completing the Awowogei section of the recipe for disaster series. Teleportation tabs can be purchased from the grand exchange.
the Ape Atoll Dungeon is located in the Southern part of the island.
From here, you’ll want to turn on your protect from Melee while you navigate through the tunnels as illustrated below. Sipping from a stamina potion is advised.
Chinning in MM2 tunnels
Since Monkey Madness 2 came out, the maniacal monkeys have become a superior option to training ranged with higher experience rates.
Maniacal monkeys are located in Kruk’s dungeon which is located in Ape Atoll.
Once you climb down the trapdoor, you’ll find a hole on your right side. Make sure you use the “Look-in-all-hole” option to check whether or not your current world is occupied.

How chinning works
Chinchompas, just like ice barrage have the ability to target multiple targets at once. This makes for great ranged experience rates in multi-combat zones where aggressive monsters constantly spawn back. This is where skeletal or maniacal monkeys from MM1 and MM2 come in, these are the best targets for chinning in osrs.
Chinning with bonecrusher necklace
Requirements: 80 prayer, Morytania Hard Diaries
The bonecrusher necklace lets you regain prayer points without using prayer potions, this is both cheaper and increases your hourly experience rates.
The bonecrusher necklace is the combination of 1 bonecrusher, 1 dragonbone necklace, and 1 hydra tail.
Both the dragonbone necklace and the hydra tail can be bought from the grand exchange. The Bonecrusher is a reward from the morytania hard diaries and must be charged with ectotokens.
So how do players benefit from having a bonecrusher necklace while chinning? It’s simple. The bonecrusher necklace combines the effects of the bonecrusher and dragonbone necklace. This means that the necklace both buries bones without touching them and regains prayer points for those buried bones.
To effectively use this you should have the necklace in your inventory and once your prayer points fall below 15, you switch to the bonecrusher necklace until you’ve regained your prayer points and then switch back to your necklace of Anguish.
