Hunter is a fun skill that can be highly profitable and fast to train. This complete 1-99 OSRS Hunter Guide contains the fastest method to reach 99 hunter, some moneymaking methods, fun alternative methods, and more.
Hunter is very profitable at higher levels (80+), which is why we’ve split up the guide in two methods. The first way is the fastest way to 99 and the other will show moneymaking methods.
Hunter Traps
Every 20 hunter levels you get 1 more trap available. Always make sure you bring the maximum amount of traps available for your level.
For every wilderness hunting spot, you get to use 1 additional trap

Hunter equipment
If you’re an ironman, you’ll have to stick to the hunter stores around Gielinor. There are two hunter shops currently, one in Nardah and one in Yanille. You can find them on the map by looking for the fur icon.
As a regular player, you can just buy your traps from the grand exchange.
Every piece of equipment listed in this guide will be available in both hunter shops and the grand exchange.
Passive Hunter Training Method: Bird house runs
With the arrival of fossil island, birdhouse runs have come as a passive way to train hunter. You can compare a birdhouse run to a farming run. Every 50 minutes you can run 4 birdhouses while you train hunter, another skill, pvm or even your homework/work.
Not home? No problem. Set up a 50 minute alert on your phone and do your runs on mobile. 😉
Inventory
You’ll want to set up a bank tab with the exact inventory to make these runs as efficiently as possible
- Digsite pendant (you can also mount it in your nexus portal room if you have one)
- 4 logs (type depending on your hunter level)
- Hammer
- Chisel
- 40 hop seeds of any kind (Barley are the cheapest)
- Clockwork (only on the first run)

OSRS Hunter Guide – Fastest Way to 99
Levels 1 – 9 Varrock Museum Quiz
Hunter is slow for the first couple levels, there is absolutely no reason to grind these out as you can quickly get them by doing the Varrock museum quiz. You can find the answers here or if you’re using runelite the answers will be highlighted for you.
Levels 9 – 20 Copper Longtails
Equipment: Bird snare
Location
- Piscatoris Hunter Area (Piscatoris Hunter Teleport Scroll/Fairy ring A K Q)
- Kourend Woodland (Woodcutting Guild teleport through skills necklace or Xeric’s talisman teleport to Xeric’s lookout)
20 – 29 Tropical Wagtails
Equipment: Bird snare
Location
Feldip Hunter Area, get here by buying a Feldip Hunter Teleport Scroll from the grand exchange, fairy ring code A K S or walk over from castle wars.
Tip: If you plan on making money with chinchompas in the future, you should do the Eagles Peak quest at level 27 which is required to access box traps. The experience reward will take you to 29 hunter, skipping 2 levels.
29 – 47 Swamp Lizards
Requirements: Priest in Peril Quest
Equipment: Net trap: small fishing net + rope
Use shift-drop to drop them as they aren’t worth the bank trip
Location:
Southeast of Canifis. Use the Kharyll teleport on the Ancient spellbook, Slayer ring teleport, Ectophial, or fairy ring code C K S to get here.
47 – 60 Orange Salamanders
Equipment: Net trap: Small fishing net + rope and desert robes/water skins to protect from desert heat
Location
Uzer Hunter Area in the Kharidian Dessert, just east of Shantay Pass. You can get here using the Necklace of Passage teleport to Desert Eagle. The necklace of passage can be bought from the grand exchange.
60 – 70 Red Salamanders
Equipment: Net trap: small fishing net + rope
Location
The Ourania Hunter Area, get here using the Ourania Teleport on the lunar spellbook or by using the spirit tree to teleport to the battlefield.
70-80/99 Black Salamanders
Equipment: Net trap: small fishing net + rope
You can take this method all the way to 99 but it’s not recommended as you’ll make no money and it’s just not fun. Better switch over to herbiboar or chinchompas.
How to catch black salamanders
To catch black salamanders, you need to bring a rope and small fishing net. You can set up 2-6 traps depending on your hunter level.
Location
The only location where you can catch Black Salamanders is the Boneyard Hunter Area in the Wilderness. Get here using a burning amulet teleport, wilderness obelisk teleport or by running north from Varrock.
80 – 99 Herbiboar Hunting
Requirements: Bone Voyage Quest
Herbiboard running came with fossil island, this is a fun way of training hunter by chasing a herbivore around the island. You can make a nice 200K hourly profit doing so and earn up to 140K hunter experience.
To start tracking a herbivore, inspect a rock, mushroom or log on the island. (If you’re using run elite these will be automatically highlighted in cyan boxes)

- Magic Secateurs
- Herb Sack (slayer/tithe farm)
- Stamina potions
Herb sack
You can get the herb sack with 750 slayer rewards points or for 250 points at the tithe farm mini-game. Tithe farm is highly recommended as it is a lot cheaper than spending 750 slayer points. If you don’t want to get a herb sack, you can instead note your herbs at the nearby leprechuans.
Profit per hour
Depending on your herblore level, you can expect around 200K+ gp per hour

Hunter: 130K/hr
Herblore: 5 – 13K/hr
OSRS Hunter Guide – Moneymaking methods
Red Chinchompas 80 – 99
Red Chinchompas are a nice moneymaking method to reach 99 hunter. From levels 80 you will have all 5 traps unlocked, giving you around 900K gp/hr. The only issue is finding a spot. Red chinchompas are camped by bots and players which is why many players opt for black salamanders or herbiboar instead.
Profit per hour: 900K/hr
Location
- Popular location: Feldip Hills (fairy ring code A K S)
- Least crowded location(no bots): red chinchompa hunting ground Western Hard Diaries are required to enter.
Black Chinchompas 80 – 99
Hunting black chinchompas can only be done in the wilderness, therefore red chinchompas are more commonly trained. Black chinchompa spots tend to be camped by pkers making red chinchompa profits better and less stressful.
If you do intend on trying black chinchompas you should wear tank gear with high magic defense (like d’hide).
Profit per hour: 1.2M/hr (calculations don’t include being pked)
Location
The only location where you can catch Black Chinchompas is in the wilderness. They are located south-east of the Lava Maze. The fastest way to get here is using the burning amulet teleport. Another option is by wilderness obelisk.
Puro puro mini-game
Just like other skills in osrs, hunter has a mini-game. The Puro-puro mini-game (actually called Impetuous Impulses) is accessible from Zanaris. You’ll need to complete the Lost City quest before gaining access.
You’ll need at least 17 hunter to do Puro-Puro as that unlocks the first impling you can catch, though it’s recommended to have at least 50 hunter before coming here.
It’s also recommended you have at least 50/79 magic so you can use the snare/tangle spell on the implings to make catching them easier.
Getting to Puro-Puro
Puro-puro is located in the wheat field in Zanaris. To get here you’ll need to wear a Dramen Staff from the Lost City Quest and head over to the abandoned shack in the Lumbridge swamp. Alternatively, you can use fairy ring code BKS if you have done the Fairy Ring Part 1 quest.
How Impetuos Impulses works
Impetuous Impulses is a very simple mini-game, all you need is a butterfly net (preferably a magic butterfly net) and Impling jars. Throughout the mini-game, you’ll be catching Implings until all your jars are filled in which case you’ll want to back them and repeat. Recommended Gear/inventory
- Weight reducing armor (preferrably graceful)
- Magic butterfly net (Buyable from Elnock outside the mini-game for 3 gourmet, 2 earth and 1 essence impling jar which you can get from the grand exchange)
- Dramen staff (for getting there)
- Impling jars
- Rune pouch with entangle/snare runes
Implings
You should never open your impling jars after catching them, for the highest profit sell them at the grand exchange. Every impling jar is tradeable with the exception of the Lucky Impling Jar which gives you a chance of receiving a random clue scroll reward from any of the clue scroll drop tables (easy to master).
